Field Notes No. 2: A Study in Contrast

Every piece begins with a conversation between materials. For the Larimar collection, I was drawn to the tension between two stones that seem to come from opposite worlds. Larimar is found in a single place on earth—the Dominican Republic. Its soft blues mirror shallow tropical waters, worn sea glass, and the shifting surface of the ocean. Looking at it feels like peering through water toward something ancient resting below. Garnet tells a different story. Deep red and almost ember-like, it has been carried and traded for thousands of years. Ancient travelers wore garnet as a protective stone, believing it offered guidance on long journeys and safe passage home.

Together, the stones remind me of a horizon line where the sea meets the sunset. The cool, tranquil blue of Larimar is balanced by the warmth and depth of garnet.

I chose this pairing not for symbolism alone, but for the way the colors seemed to belong to one another. The stones felt discovered rather than designed—like fragments collected from different places that somehow arrived together.

Each necklace in this collection is one of a kind, assembled by hand and finished with sterling silver details. No two Larimar stones are exactly alike. Their patterns, veining, and shades of blue are individually unique and cannot be replicated.
